Tips Before Getting Started

As the Render Farm is a shared resource, it works differently to your local machine. Please keep the following tips in mind as you set up your render file!

Working with 3DS Max

Compatibility - The MSD Render Farm currently uses:

  • 3DS Max 2020

  • V-Ray 5

For those running newer versions, be wary about backwards compatibility.

Backwards Saving - If you are working with a newer version of 3DS Max, there may be some utilities that sneak their way into the file even when saving for a previous version, refer to this page.

File Setup - Ensure a clean file structure! Keep all assets (models, materials etc.) in one location with distinct filenames.

Renderer Selection & Test Renders - Keep in mind that different renderers have their own set up! Make sure you test your renders using small regions and double-check the settings before sending the job off to the Render Farm.

Plugins

Bake Plugin Effects - Avoid any compatibility errors with plugins by baking as many effects as possible into the file to keep it free of plugin dependencies.

Using Plugins - The Render Farm will have access to a curated selection of plugins but there is an opportunity to submit plugins for your job to use. Only free and open-source plugins will be supported.

Plugin Compatibility - If you need to submit a plugin to the farm, ensure it is compatible with the software versions listed above. A plugin will denote its compatible 3DS Max version by indicating the year in its name.

Scene Conversion

3DS Max has a handy Scene Convertor tool (Rendering > Scene Convertor) to translate any incompatible content, due to versioning history or external plugins.

In the editor, set up any conversion rules with a source and a destination, [Add Rule] to finalise it and then convert your scene.
