Sewing Machine

The sewing machine can be used to join fabrics together using a mechanically controlled needle.

The SINGER 4432 and 4411

Our domestic tabletop sewing machines are Singer Heavy Duty 4432 and 4411. With a fast sewing speed of 1,100 stitches per minute, they provide a professional speed for faster results.

They are heavy duty models for thicker fabrics with 32 built-in stitch options for different purposes.

How it works

A sewing machine stitches two pieces of fabric together by the needle pushing the top thread down through the material, this thread then forms a loop on the underside of the fabric, catching the shuttle hook to then loop around the bobbin thread. The needle then pulls the thread back up through the material, pulling both threads tight to form one single stitch.

Needle - The SINGER Style 2020 Regular Point needles, size 14 are used for sewing medium weight woven (non-stretch) fabrics.

Hand wheel – manual control over needle position.

Foot control peddle – to run the sewing machine stitch.

All purpose Presser foot – used for general sewing on most types of fabric. The bottom of the foot is flat, so that the fabric is held down firmly against the feed teeth while sewing. It also has a wide slot for that the needle can move from left to right, depending on the which stitch you sew.

Presser foot lifter – to remove the pressure on the fabric once finished sewing or to turn the fabric without removing the needle to maintain the current position.

Presser foot pressure dial – when sewing lightweight or heavyweight fabric, it may be necessary to decrease or increase the presser foot pressure to help the machine feed the fabric through the machine.

Feed teeth lever – to change the height of the feed teeth needs to be changed when using thicker fabrics to help feed the fabric through the machine.

Bobbins - Stitches are formed using a top thread and a bottom thread. A bobbin is like a mini spool that holds the bottom thread which shows at the backside of the fabric. The machine uses only classic SINGER class 15 transparent bobbins.

Bobbin case – where the bobbin is held.

Bobbin winding area – to thread the bobbin.

Spool holder – used to hold the thread spool securely onto the spool pin. Two spool holders are supplied, the large spool holder has one end wider than the other, select the side that best suits your thread size.

Reverse lever – press when beginning or finishing a stitch line to secure the thread from unravelling.

Stitch selector dial – 32 stitch options and 50 stitch options.More information about these options video below.

Stitch length dial - Customise the appearance of a stitch by increasing or decreasing the distance between stitches.

Stitch width dial - The size of the stitch from left to right is adjustable, to make the stitch sew narrower or wider as desired.

Needle position dial – depending on the presser foot used, the needle position may need to be adjusted to sit central to the presser foot.

Tension dial – may need to be adjusted if the tension is off. This will also be covered in another video where we cover troubleshooting

Free-Arm Design - Slide off the removable storage compartment for access to the free arm. Making it easy to sew trouser hems, sleeve cuffs and other smaller or tubular objects.

Thread cutter – to cut the thread at the end of sewing.

Extra Accessories

Zipper foot - Use the zipper foot for inserting zips by attaching the foot to the presser foot holder on either side of the foot; depending on which side of the zipper is being sewn. The zipper foot can also be used to create and insert piping.

Button sewing foot - The button sewing foot quickly and neatly sews on buttons, eliminating the need to sew them on manually.

Buttonhole Foot 4-step - The foot is used for making a 4-step buttonhole and holds that fabric securely as you sew the top, bottom left side and right side of your button hole.

Edge/Quilting Guide - The edge/quilting guide can be used to aid in sewing extra wide seam allowances, as well as sewing straight lines such as when quilting. The end of the guide is placed into the opening at the back side of the presser foot holder. Its position is adjustable as desired.

Auxiliary Spool Pin - Use the auxiliary pool pin to place the thread upright. Some types of thread spools may work better in a vertical position. Additionally, this extra spool pin, which fits in the spool pinhole at the top of the sewing machine, is used for twin needle sewing.

Spool Pin Felt - If the thread on your Auxiliary spool pin reels off to fast, you can place this small felt disk onto the pin, underneath the spool, to help control the unreeling of the thread spool.

Safety considerations

  • Make sure your sewing machine cords are in good shape.

  • Power off when making adjustments e.g. changing presser foot or needle.

  • Tie hair, loose jewellery and clothing back to prevent it from getting caught in the needle motion.

  • Make sure there is enough light to avoid straining your eyes and mistakes.

  • Only one person should operate the machine at any time.

  • Watch your fingers and keep them at a good distance away from the needle on either side of the needle.

  • Never machine over straight pins. Downward pressure onto a straight pin will snap the needle, which is extremely hazardous to face and eyes along with anyone in the surrounding space.

  • Use eye protection if sewing with straight pins.

  • Only run the machine at a speed you are comfortable with.

  • Unplug and put away in a clean condition after every use.
